Appomattox County Circuit Court Clerk

The Clerk of Circuit Court in Appomattox County is the official keeper of all court records. Appomattox General District Court

The Appomattox County General District Court is part of the 10th Judicial District. It handles traffic violations, misdemeanor criminal charges, small civil claims up to $25,000, and preliminary hearings for felony cases. Small claims cases involving up to $5,000 can be filed here as well. The General District Court operates at the same courthouse location in Appomattox.

District court case records are searchable online through the GDC Online Case Information portal. If you lose a case in General District Court, you have ten days to file a notice of appeal. Appeals go to the Appomattox Circuit Court, where a new hearing takes place. The Clerk of Circuit Court can tell you what forms are needed to file an appeal.

Types of Court Records in Appomattox County

Getting Copies of Appomattox Court Records

Copies of court documents from the Appomattox County Clerk's office cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies, which include a deputy clerk's signature and the court seal, carry an additional fee of $2.00 per document. Triple-seal copies, signed by both the Clerk and a judge, cost an extra $2.50 per document. These fees apply to case records, land documents, and other official files held by the Clerk.

Mail requests are accepted by the Clerk's office. Include the case number or year and the full names of all parties in the case. Send a certified check or money order payable to the Clerk of the Appomattox Circuit Court. Call ahead at (434) 352-5275 to confirm the fee before mailing payment. Also include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the office can return the copies to you. In-person requests are usually handled the same day. Mail requests may take several days.

Public Access and FOIA in Appomattox County

Virginia's public records law, at Va. Code § 2.2-3700, gives citizens the right to inspect and copy public records. Court records in Appomattox County fall under this law. The Clerk is required to respond to records requests within five business days. You do not need to explain why you want the records.
